French lawmakers unanimously approve reform to strengthen child protection in schools

French lawmakers have unanimously approved a new bill aimed at strengthening the protection of children against abuse in schools and extracurricular activities. The vote reflects growing concern in France over child safety in educational environments following several high-profile allegations of misconduct.

The legislation was passed in its first reading by 187 votes to zero in the National Assembly late Monday night. It was introduced after a parliamentary inquiry linked to the Notre-Dame de Bétharram case, a scandal involving allegations of abuse at a private Catholic school near Pau in southwestern France.

The proposal was drafted by lawmakers Violette Spillebout of the Renaissance party and Paul Vannier of La France Insoumise. It follows months of investigations and hearings conducted by a parliamentary commission established to examine how allegations of abuse were handled and what senior officials may have known, including former Prime Minister François Bayrou.

The new law aims to reinforce supervision of adults working with children in schools and after-school programs, as well as strengthen regulation of private educational institutions. However, lawmakers removed a controversial measure that would have required religious figures to report abuse disclosed during confession, preserving the confidentiality of religious practice.

Supporters argue that the reform will improve accountability, enhance monitoring systems, and help prevent violence against minors. The Bétharram case has sparked a national debate in France about institutional responsibility and the need for stronger safeguards in education.

The bill will now continue through the legislative process before potentially becoming law.
