France Declares Support for Moroccan Sovereignty Over Sahara
In a significant diplomatic development, French President Emmanuel Macron has formally recognized Moroccan sovereignty over Sahara. This announcement was conveyed through a message addressed to King Mohammed VI, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of Morocco's Throne Day celebrations, according to a statement released by the Royal Cabinet on Tuesday.
President Macron's message affirmed France's unwavering position on this critical national security issue for Morocco. He emphasized that France will consistently align its actions, both nationally and internationally, with this stance. Macron stated, "For France, autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the framework within which this issue must be resolved. Our support for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco in 2007 is clear and steadfast," highlighting that this plan now stands as the sole foundation for achieving a fair, durable, and negotiated political solution, in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions.
The French President noted the growing international consensus supporting Moroccan sovereignty and the autonomy plan. Macron underscored France's active role in this consensus, particularly through its backing of the efforts led by the United Nations Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy. "It is time to move forward. I therefore encourage all parties to come together to reach a political settlement that is within reach," he urged in his message.
Macron also commended Morocco's efforts in the economic and social development of the Moroccan Sahara, pledging that "France will support Morocco in this endeavor for the benefit of the local populations."
This declaration by France, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, marks a significant and impactful shift in support of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara. It aligns with the momentum driven by King Mohammed VI and supported by numerous countries worldwide, advocating for Morocco's territorial integrity and the autonomy plan as the exclusive framework for resolving this regional dispute.
