Five wanted suspects killed in shootout with police north of Durban
Five suspects wanted for serious violent crimes were killed during a shootout with police on Thursday morning in Inanda, north of Durban, according to South African police.
The suspects were linked to cases of murder, attempted murder—including attacks against law enforcement officers—and armed robberies, police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said.
“The suspects were terrorizing Inanda and surrounding areas. At the end of November, they attempted to shoot police officers and have been on the run ever since,” he added.
Police reported that when officers arrived at the location on Thursday morning, the suspects opened fire. “The police returned fire, and during the exchange, five suspects were fatally wounded,” Netshiunda said.
Four firearms were seized, and a thorough search of the property is still underway.
In a separate incident, two other suspects wanted in connection with a Tuesday shooting that left two people dead and two injured in the same area were killed in a police shootout on Wednesday.
Authorities stated that these incidents are part of intensified operations aimed at combating violent crime in Inanda, one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most crime-affected areas.
South Africa continues to face high levels of violent crime, averaging around 63 murders per day, according to police data.
