Fez Police Crack Down on Illegal Abortion Network, Arrest Eight

In a significant move to combat illegal abortion practices and related crimes, police in Fez have arrested eight individuals, including a nurse and a herbalist, for their involvement in illicit drug sales and abortion facilitation. The arrests took place on Friday, November 29, following a targeted operation that led to the seizure of abortion pills and medical equipment linked to the network.

The investigation began when officers apprehended a woman caught in possession of 50 abortion pills. Further inquiries revealed she had been supplying the pills to a nurse at a local clinic. A subsequent search of another suspect's home uncovered 49 more pills, pregnancy tests, medical tools, counterfeit documents, and a sum of money. During the investigation, several other individuals connected to the case were detained. Two suspects remain in custody, while the others have been released on bail as authorities continue their investigation.

This crackdown is part of a broader effort by Moroccan authorities to address illegal healthcare practices and human trafficking. In October, Fez was again in the spotlight when police dismantled a newborn trafficking ring. The operation, which resulted in the arrest of 34 people, including health professionals and private security guards, exposed a disturbing network where patients were extorted for medical services and unmarried mothers were pressured to sell their babies. Investigators also uncovered stolen medical supplies in the homes of some of the suspects.

The court hearings from this investigation led to several convictions. Notably, a nurse and an unemployed woman received three-year prison sentences, while a security guard was sentenced to two years. Other individuals received jail time ranging from one to six months. The case has raised concerns over the corruption within healthcare institutions and the ongoing problem of illegal baby trafficking in Morocco.

Authorities continue to intensify efforts to combat these crimes, sending a clear message that healthcare corruption and illegal practices will not be tolerated.
