Euro 2024 Round of 16: Austria Seeks Confirmation Against Turkey, Netherlands Face Romanian Challenge

The Euro 2024 tournament's round of 16 promises exciting matchups, featuring the Netherlands facing Romania and Austria aiming to uphold their stellar form against Turkey.

Netherlands vs. Romania: 5 PM

Romania finds itself in the round of 16 of a major tournament for the first time since Euro 2000, having topped historic Group E. In a group where all four teams finished with four points, Edward Iordanescu's men edged out favorites Belgium. Meanwhile, the Netherlands secured third place in Group D.

The Oranje collected four points from their first two matches in Germany but suffered a loss against Austria on matchday three, relinquishing first place and missing automatic group qualification. However, their point tally was sufficient to rank among the best third-placed teams. The 1988 European champions now aim for their first round of 16 victory at the Euros since reaching the semifinals in 2004.

The Netherlands have a strong historical record against Romania, having lost just once in 14 meetings. In major tournaments, their only encounter thus far was a 2-0 victory in the group stage of Euro 2008.

Austria vs. Turkey: 8 PM

Austria's victory over the Netherlands in the final group stage match saw Ralf Rangnick's side surprisingly top Group D. Not only did the Austrians relegate the Netherlands to third place, but they also leapfrogged two-time European champions France, who finished second.

Turkey secured their place in the round of 16 by finishing second in Group F, with wins over Georgia and the Czech Republic. The Turks last featured in the tournament's round of 16 when they reached the quarterfinals in 2008.

This will mark the first major tournament meeting between Austria and Turkey. According to Opta, Turkey are unbeaten in their last five competitive matches against Austria, though the most recent encounter dates back 13 years to September 2011.
