EU Diplomat Expresses Disappointment Over Inability to Influence Israeli Actions Amid Escalating Conflict
In a candid reflection on the ongoing Middle Eastern turmoil, EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell expressed his disappointment that no global power, including the United States, has managed to sway Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from his aggressive military stance against militants in Gaza and Lebanon. Speaking to journalists during the UN General Assembly, Borrell stated, “What we do is to put all diplomatic pressure to a ceasefire, but nobody seems to be able to stop Netanyahu, neither in Gaza nor in the West Bank.”
Borrell supported a joint initiative by France and the United States advocating for a 21-day ceasefire in Lebanon, an appeal that has largely been disregarded by Israel as it intensifies its military operations against Hezbollah. He noted Netanyahu's unwavering commitment to dismantling Hezbollah, drawing parallels to Israel's extensive campaign against Hamas in Gaza. “If the interpretation of being destroyed is the same as with Hamas, then we are going to go for a long war,” Borrell warned.
The outgoing EU diplomat emphasized the need for a diversified diplomatic approach beyond reliance on U.S. efforts, which have struggled for months to broker a truce that would also facilitate hostage releases. “We cannot rely just on the US. The US tried several times; they didn’t succeed,” he remarked, referencing past diplomatic failures such as the 2000 Camp David talks aimed at resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
In a defiant address at the UN, Netanyahu reaffirmed his determination to achieve Israel's objectives against Hezbollah amidst ongoing hostilities that have resulted in significant casualties. The situation remains precarious as international calls for peace face mounting challenges from entrenched positions on both sides.
