Eighteen injured after tourist train derails in southern Spain
Eighteen people, including nine children, were injured after a tourist train partially overturned in the municipality of Cártama, located in the province of Málaga, authorities said on Sunday.
The accident occurred on Saturday evening at around 9:30 p.m. when one of the two carriages of the tourist train overturned while negotiating a curve. The train was carrying approximately 30 passengers at the time of the incident.
Emergency services in the region of Andalusia responded quickly to the scene and provided medical assistance to the injured passengers. Among the victims were nine minors aged between 5 and 17 years old.
Local officials reported that all injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals and medical centers for examinations and treatment. No life-threatening injuries were reported, and authorities indicated that none of the victims were in critical condition.
The tourist train was operating free shuttle rides as part of a local food and cultural festival. Following the accident, municipal authorities announced the immediate suspension of the service while investigations are conducted to determine the exact cause of the derailment.
The incident has raised questions about safety measures for tourist transport attractions, although officials stressed that the focus remains on supporting those affected and establishing the circumstances that led to the accident.
