Diplomatic Ties Strengthened: Morocco and France Forge a New Path

In a significant diplomatic move, Morocco and France have embarked on a mission to enhance their strategic partnership. This initiative, marked by high-level discussions, has been ongoing since October 2023.

Ambassador Samira Sitaïl, Morocco's envoy to France, recently met with French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin. Their dialogue underscored both nations' commitment to fortifying their growing relationship. The focus was on enhancing security cooperation and exploring new avenues for deeper collaboration, as revealed in a statement from the Moroccan embassy in Paris.

This promising dialogue follows France's official recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over Sahara. In a letter to King Mohammed VI, commemorating the 25th anniversary of his reign, French President Emmanuel Macron affirmed France's unwavering support for Morocco's position on the disputed region. Macron reiterated that France's stance is "consistent and unwavering," aligning with Morocco's 2007 Autonomy Plan, which he deemed the sole foundation for a fair, sustainable, and negotiated resolution, in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.

Ambassador Sitaïl, speaking to French media outlet Europe 1-CNews, expressed her satisfaction with France's endorsement. She noted that this development was the culmination of extensive discussions that began with her appointment as ambassador in October 2023.

"We checked all the necessary boxes, starting with trust, and put a number of topics on the table to renovate our partnership and make it something exceptional," Sitaïl remarked.

The meeting with Darmanin is part of a series of visits by high-ranking French officials to Morocco, aimed at mending and strengthening ties with this crucial North African partner. These visits, notably in April, included French Foreign Affairs Minister Stéphane Séjourné, who emphasized the need to repair relations and address the Sahara issue more directly. Additionally, French Delegate Minister for Foreign Trade, Franck Riester, highlighted the French Development Agency's interest in supporting development projects in the region.

Darmanin's visit to Morocco also involved discussions on a wide range of topics, including enhancing bilateral security cooperation. During his stay, he met with Moroccan Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit and Minister of Islamic Affairs Ahmed Taoufiq. Key issues on the agenda included joint efforts against organized crime, terrorism, drug trafficking, irregular migration, and human trafficking.

The renewed focus on Morocco-France relations marks a pivotal moment in diplomatic efforts, reflecting a shared vision for a more robust and cooperative future.
