Deadly fire hits makassar amid nationwide demonstrations
Three people were killed in Makassar, Indonesia, after a fire broke out at a city council building during violent protests, authorities confirmed. The blaze was started by demonstrators who had stormed the building amid ongoing demonstrations over low wages and generous allowances for lawmakers.
The protests erupted after a motorcycle taxi driver, Affan Kurniawan, was run over and killed by a police tactical vehicle during previous demonstrations. Footage of the incident went viral, sparking nationwide anger.
Protesters also set fire to regional council buildings in West Nusa Tenggara, Pekalongan (Central Java), and Cirebon (West Java). Authorities responded with teargas and police interventions, detaining seven officers for questioning related to Kurniawan’s death.
The victims of the Makassar fire included two council employees and one civil servant. Authorities confirmed that two died on the scene and one in hospital, while four others sustained injuries.
These protests mark the largest and most violent unrest since President Prabowo Subianto assumed office less than a year ago. Demonstrators expressed frustration over government perks, austerity measures, and rising living costs.
