Cuba announces one-month suspension of jet fuel supplies to airlines
Cuban authorities have informed airlines operating flights to the island that supplies of aviation fuel will be suspended for a period of one month, starting early next week, due to the country’s deepening energy crisis.
According to airline industry sources, the absence of jet fuel will mainly affect long-haul carriers, which will be required to make technical stopovers on return flights to refuel outside Cuba. Regional flights within the Caribbean are expected to continue operating with limited disruption.
Several international airlines have begun adjusting their flight operations accordingly. Some carriers have confirmed that routes to Havana will be maintained, but with planned refueling stops in neighboring Caribbean countries to ensure safe operations.
The fuel shortage is part of a broader energy crisis facing Cuba following a sharp decline in oil supplies from Venezuela. The situation has been further aggravated by mounting pressure from the United States, including warnings of possible trade measures against countries supplying oil to the island.
In response, the Cuban government has announced emergency measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption. These include shorter working weeks for public institutions, expanded teleworking, restrictions on fuel sales, and cuts to public transportation services between provinces. Authorities have also announced temporary closures of some tourist facilities and adjustments to school and university schedules.
Officials say the measures are intended to prioritize electricity generation and food production, while safeguarding key economic activities that generate foreign currency. Meanwhile, frequent power outages and fuel shortages continue to affect daily life across the island.
