Comoros President Expresses Gratitude to Morocco for Support in WTO Accession
In a significant diplomatic gesture, Comoros President Azali Assoumani has extended his heartfelt thanks to Morocco for its invaluable support in facilitating Comoros’ accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO). This milestone, achieved in February, marks a pivotal moment in Comoros’ economic history.
During a recent meeting with WTO Director General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, President Assoumani underscored Morocco’s instrumental role in the process. He emphasized that the successful accession will enhance Comoros’ economic openness and integration into regional, continental, and global value chains.
“This accession will not only diversify our international trade exchanges but also position Comoros to leverage Morocco’s support in the post-accession phase,” Assoumani remarked. He noted that Comoros seeks to harness Morocco’s expertise, particularly in the renewable energy sector, to establish reliable energy sources. This initiative aims to spur economic growth and add value to the country’s exports.
Moreover, President Assoumani highlighted Comoros’ aspiration to emulate Morocco’s accomplishments across various sectors, including tourism. By doing so, Comoros hopes to attract foreign direct investments and bolster its overall economic performance.
Morocco’s ambassador and permanent representative to Geneva, Omar Zniber, warmly welcomed President Assoumani’s positive remarks. Zniber reiterated the importance of Comoros’ WTO membership, emphasizing Morocco’s steadfast support for African causes on the global stage.
Zniber stated, “The accession of Comoros to the WTO underscores the significance of integrating Least Developed Countries into the multilateral trading system. It fosters international trade relations grounded in transparency, fairness, and inclusivity, thereby supporting the development goals of member countries and reinforcing the credibility of the WTO.”
This development not only signifies a new chapter for Comoros but also highlights the collaborative spirit between African nations in pursuing shared economic and developmental objectives.
