China imposes new tariffs on US goods in response to trade measures
China has announced a series of retaliatory tariffs on American goods, escalating tensions in the ongoing trade dispute between the two economic giants. The new measures, set to take effect on March 10, were revealed on Tuesday in response to the United States' decision to increase tariffs on Chinese imports.
On Monday, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order raising tariffs on Chinese goods entering the United States from 10% to 20%. In retaliation, the State Council Tariff Commission of China stated that an additional 15% tariff will be applied to specific US imports, including poultry, wheat, corn, and cotton. Meanwhile, a 10% surcharge will target sorghum, soybeans, pork, beef, seafood, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products.
China, the world's largest buyer of US agricultural products, primarily imports soybeans, beef, and corn. The move is expected to significantly impact the American agricultural industry, which relies heavily on exports to the Chinese market.
In addition to the tariffs, Beijing has taken further steps by adding 15 US companies to its export control list and filing a formal complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO). Among the affected firms are Leidos, a key player in aviation and biomedical research, and Gibbs & Cox, a naval architecture company. Other companies listed include Shield AI and HavocAI, specializing in artificial intelligence, as well as drone manufacturers Skydio and Red Six Solutions.
China’s announcement comes amid the opening of the "Two Sessions," the country’s most significant political event of the year, held in Beijing. The term "Two Sessions" refers to the annual meetings of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the National People's Congress (NPC), China’s top legislative body.
During a press conference, Lou Qinjian, spokesperson for the NPC, reaffirmed the importance of the economic relationship between the two nations. "The essence of Sino-American economic and trade relations is mutual benefit," Lou stated, emphasizing the need for balanced cooperation despite the growing tensions.
