Celebrated Moroccan Chemist Honored by UK’s Royal Society of Chemistry
Professor Mama El Rhazi Recognized for Her Exceptional Contributions to Chemistry and Advocacy for Inclusivity in Africa
Renowned Moroccan professor Mama El Rhazi has been named an honorary member of the United Kingdom’s Royal Society of Chemistry, a prestigious acknowledgment of her outstanding contributions to the field of chemistry and her advocacy for sustainability and inclusivity in Africa.
Annually, the Royal Society of Chemistry honors distinguished individuals in the chemical sciences by inviting them to become honorary members, acknowledging their exceptional impact on the field. This year, Professor El Rhazi joins the ranks of eminent chemists celebrated for their significant achievements.
El Rhazi’s recognition highlights her tenure as the former president of the Federation of African Societies of Chemistry (2017-2022) and the Union of Arab Chemists. Her leadership in higher education and scientific research has been influential both nationally and internationally. The Society lauded her for her dedication to promoting chemistry in North Africa and the Middle East, as well as her efforts in fostering sustainability and inclusivity within the African continent.
In a statement to MAP, Professor El Rhazi expressed her delight at being honored alongside notable chemists like David Cole-Hamilton. She underscored the importance of providing Moroccan and African students with opportunities to engage in international conferences, where they can form new collaborations and gain insights from leading experts in the field. Such experiences, she noted, are vital for their professional growth and development.
El Rhazi, who is a professor at Hassan II University and serves as the president of the Moroccan Association of Analytical Chemistry for Sustainable Development, hopes that Morocco will establish a chemical society that rivals its British counterpart in research and publication activities.
The Royal Society of Chemistry, established in 1841, is dedicated to promoting excellence in the chemical sciences. Its first president, Thomas Graham, is renowned for inventing dialysis. The honorary member distinction is awarded to individuals whose research careers have had a profound impact on scientific progress, recognizing their extraordinary contributions to the field.
Professor El Rhazi’s inclusion in this illustrious group underscores her significant role in advancing chemistry and advocating for a more inclusive and sustainable scientific community in Africa.
