Canadian pilot allegedly flew more than 900 flights without required licence
A former Air Canada captain is accused of having operated more than 900 commercial flights over a period of 17 years without holding the mandatory pilot licence required to command passenger aircraft, raising serious concerns about aviation oversight and document verification procedures.
According to investigators, the pilot—identified as Geoffrey Wall—worked for Air Canada for nearly three decades after joining the airline in 1998. He was promoted to captain in 2009 and reportedly flew long-haul routes on aircraft including Boeing 767, 777, and 787 models.
To legally serve as a captain of commercial aircraft in Canada, pilots must hold an Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL), the highest level of certification in civil aviation. Authorities allege that Wall never possessed this qualification, despite presenting documentation that allowed him to continue operating flights for years.
Investigators also claim that the pilot used altered or falsified certification documents to conceal the absence of the required licence, allegedly deceiving both his employer and Transport Canada. During his career, he is believed to have flown more than 900 domestic and international flights while earning close to 3 million Canadian dollars in salary.
The case came to light in March 2025 during a routine operational evaluation at Toronto Pearson International Airport, where irregularities were reportedly discovered in his documentation. This triggered a regulatory review by Transport Canada.
In January 2026, law enforcement authorities launched a formal criminal investigation dubbed “Project Icarus,” leading to the pilot’s arrest and indictment on June 1, 2026.
The case has sparked renewed debate over airline hiring controls, certification verification systems, and the robustness of aviation safety oversight in Canada’s commercial aviation sector.
Authorities continue to investigate how the alleged deception remained undetected for nearly two decades.
