CAF Awards: Othmane Maamma named young player of the year

Othmane Maamma, standout talent of the Morocco U20 Atlas Lion Cubs, has been crowned Young Player of the Year at the 2025 CAF Awards. The prize was presented on Wednesday, November 19, at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Rabat.

Maamma, vice-captain of the Atlas Lion Cubs and MVP of the U20 World Cup, earned this new distinction after an exceptional season that confirmed him as one of the brightest rising stars in African football.

He was shortlisted alongside Abdellah Ouazane, attacking midfielder for Ajax Amsterdam and Morocco’s U17 national team, and South African prospect Tylon Smith of Queens Park Rangers.

Only one Moroccan player had previously won this prestigious award: Atlas Lions captain Achraf Hakimi, who received the title in 2018 and 2019 during his Borussia Dortmund years.

Othmane Maamma’s recognition comes as a reward for a memorable U20 World Cup in Chile in 2025, where Morocco lifted the trophy for the first time in its history.
