Bugey Nuclear plant granted temporary environmental exemption during French heatwave

French authorities have approved a temporary environmental exemption for the Bugey Nuclear Power Plant, allowing the facility to operate under adjusted thermal discharge limits during the ongoing heatwave.

The measure, which will remain in force until July 20, was adopted to help safeguard the stability of France’s electricity network as extreme temperatures increase energy demand across the country.

Energy security prioritised amid exceptional weather conditions

The decision was formalised through a government order published in the Official Journal, validating a ruling by the French Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ASNR).

Under the temporary exemption, the plant will be permitted to release cooling water at temperatures exceeding the standard environmental thresholds normally imposed on the facility.

Authorities acknowledged that the measure could have environmental consequences but argued that maintaining electricity production during the heatwave is essential to ensuring the reliability of the national power system.

Balancing environmental protection and grid stability

Nuclear power plants rely heavily on water resources for cooling operations. During periods of extreme heat, river temperatures can rise significantly, making it more difficult for facilities to comply with environmental discharge regulations while maintaining production levels.

The Bugey plant, located in the Ain department in eastern France, is one of several nuclear facilities that may face operational constraints during prolonged heatwaves.

The temporary adjustment reflects the growing challenge European energy systems face as climate-related weather events become more frequent and intense.
