In a proactive move to safeguard public health, Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. of Delray, Florida, has initiated a comprehensive recall of whole cucumbers shipped to various states between May 17 and May 21, 2024. The decision was prompted by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's alarming discovery of a salmonella-contaminated product sample, raising concerns about potential food safety risks.
The recall encompasses cucumbers distributed to retail and food service distribution centers across 14 states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. The affected produce is characterized by its dark green color, a diameter ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches, and a length of 5 to 9 inches, packaged in bulk cartons.
Salmonella, a notorious bacterial pathogen, can cause severe and potentially life-threatening infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as the young, elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. Even for healthy individuals, salmonella exposure can trigger unpleasant symptoms like fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort.
