Al Haouz Earthquake: 1.2 Billion Dirhams Allocated for Mosque Restoration

In the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck the Al Haouz region, the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs has unveiled a comprehensive 1.2 billion dirham plan to restore the mosques damaged by the seismic event. This ambitious initiative, spanning three years, underscores the government's unwavering commitment to preserving the nation's religious and cultural heritage.

The details of the plan were disclosed by Ahmed Toufiq, the Minister of Habous and Islamic Affairs, in response to a parliamentary inquiry from the Justice and Development Party regarding the delays in repairing the affected mosques. Toufiq's response shed light on the intricate process and the substantial financial investment required to undertake this monumental task.

According to the minister, extensive technical assessments and studies have already been conducted on 129 mosques within the Marrakech prefecture, necessitating an investment of 979,000 dirhams for the evaluation process alone. Furthermore, the restoration of 32 mosques is expected to require an additional 28.36 million dirhams.

To ensure the continuity of religious activities during the restoration process, the ministry has identified 31 alternate sites in collaboration with local authorities, charitable organizations, civil society groups, and donors. This proactive measure aims to minimize disruptions and provide worshippers with suitable temporary facilities.

The devastating earthquake's impact extended far beyond the Al Haouz region, affecting a total of 2,292 mosques across six provinces, including Chichaoua, Taroudant, Ouarzazate, Azilal, and Marrakech. The scale of the damage underscores the urgency and magnitude of the restoration efforts required.

To coordinate and oversee the repair and rehabilitation of these religious structures and waqf properties, a specialized unit has been established at the central level. This dedicated team will supervise the intricate process of restoring the damaged buildings, ensuring adherence to the highest standards of quality and authenticity.
