Africa lifts continental health emergency over Mpox
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) announced this week the lifting of the continental public health emergency related to the Mpox outbreak.
The decision follows recommendations from the Africa CDC Emergency Consultative Group and reflects strengthened health security across the continent. According to the institution, the progress achieved highlights Africa’s effective leadership, enhanced regional cooperation and strong international partnerships in addressing complex public health challenges.
“This moment represents an important milestone in Africa’s collective journey toward stronger health security,” the Africa CDC stated, while emphasizing that the end of the emergency status does not mean the elimination of Mpox from the continent.
The lifting of the emergency signals a shift from crisis response to a long-term, country-led elimination strategy. However, the virus remains endemic in several regions, requiring sustained vigilance, targeted investments and continued innovation to prevent future resurgence.
