Morocco is making significant progress in bolstering its electricity production from renewable sources, marking a notable upswing in 2023. According to a recent report from the Directorate of Studies and Financial Forecasts, total electricity generation experienced a 2.4% increase last year, showcasing a substantial improvement compared to the modest 0.4% rise recorded in 2022.

The private sector's involvement in renewable energy emerged as a driving force, with output witnessing a remarkable 5.3% surge, propelled by the country's concerted effort to diversify its energy portfolio. Notably, green energy production experienced a commendable upsurge of 18.3%, aligning with the objectives outlined in Law 13-09 aimed at transitioning away from fossil fuels. However, electricity generation from state-run utilities experienced a setback, declining by 9.4% following a significant 15% increase in the previous year.

This positive momentum persisted through December, with power generation witnessing a remarkable surge of 10.7% compared to the same period in 2022. Concurrently, imports surged by 23.8% to cater to the escalating demand. Overall, the volume of net energy both imported and exported grew by 4%, sustaining the favorable trend observed the previous year.

The rise in consumption mirrored this growth, escalating by 2.7% to reach new record levels. Increased sales across diverse sectors, including heavy industry, commercial enterprises, and households, fueled this upward trajectory. The burgeoning demand is attributed to Morocco's expanding population and thriving economy.

In anticipation of further growth in usage, Energy Minister Leila Benali emphasized the imperative to strengthen infrastructure and surpass the targeted 52% renewable energy threshold by 2030. Morocco's substantial progress underscores its commitment to a bold transition towards a sustainable, low-carbon energy landscape.
