In a stern warning, the African Development Bank (AfDB) has reiterated grave concerns over the escalating water scarcity crisis in Morocco, exacerbated by the adverse effects of climate change. The bank's latest report paints a grim picture, highlighting the far-reaching implications of this crisis on various sectors, from tourism and agriculture to services and industry.

The report underscores the urgency of the situation, citing declining water tables and slowed reservoir replenishment over the past six years. This critical juncture has prompted the Moroccan government to implement numerous projects aimed at bolstering and securing access to water resources, including accelerated dam construction, seawater desalination, wastewater reuse, and initiatives dedicated to safeguarding drinking water supplies.

While acknowledging Morocco's proactive efforts to address the water crisis, the AfDB's report echoes concerns raised by the World Bank last year. The World Bank acknowledged Morocco's engagement in finding solutions to mitigate water stress challenges but cautioned against unsustainable measures, such as exploiting groundwater reserves and increasing desalination without adequately addressing efficiency and governance issues.

The World Bank's report dubbed the situation in the Middle East and North Africa region as "fiscally and environmentally unsustainable," emphasizing the need for government policies to prioritize reducing water losses and implementing efficiency measures to address water challenges effectively.

Over the years, Morocco has implemented various measures to combat water scarcity, including campaigns promoting the rationalization of drinking water use and mandating temporary closures of car washes and public hammams to conserve water resources. However, the AfDB's latest warning underscores the urgency of comprehensive and sustainable solutions to avert a looming crisis that threatens to cripple multiple sectors vital to the nation's economy and well-being.
