In a recent statement to the electronic media platform 'Walaw', Abdelfattah El Fatihi. Director of the Sahara and Africa Strategic Studies Center, addressed the implications of UN envoy Staffan de Mistura's proposal regarding the division of Sahara. El Fatihi asserted that this suggestion would not disrupt Morocco’s political trajectory, which has centered on its autonomy initiative since 2007.

El Fatihi emphasized Morocco's substantial progress with the United Nations Security Council, stating that the nation is committed to its strategy aimed at enhancing its presence in Africa through the Atlantic initiative. He underscored that the autonomy proposal is grounded in its seriousness and reliability, garnering broad international support.

He described de Mistura's proposal as largely emotional and reactive, lacking a solid foundation in the realities of the Sahara crisis. According to El Fatihi, de Mistura seems disconnected from the evolving dynamics surrounding this complex issue. He pointed out that significant nations, including the United States and several European countries, have endorsed Morocco's autonomy initiative.

Furthermore, El Fatihi criticized de Mistura's request for further clarification on Morocco's autonomy plan as a diversion from established positions. He noted that international stakeholders have already formulated their stances based on the clearly defined objectives of this initiative since its inception. The Moroccan government, he stated, remains open to constructive dialogue concerning this proposal.

Notably, de Mistura recently revisited a concept from 2002, proposing a division of Sahara as a potential resolution to the ongoing conflict. This idea was initially introduced by Algeria under former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and was categorically rejected by Morocco at that time. However, de Mistura is now seeking a more detailed understanding of Morocco's autonomy plan and aims to initiate another round of discussions involving Algeria.

El Fatihi’s insights reflect a broader sentiment within Morocco regarding its sovereignty over Sahara and highlight the complexities surrounding international negotiations in this protracted dispute. As discussions continue, the emphasis remains on finding a solution that respects Morocco’s territorial integrity while addressing regional concerns.
