Moroccan Film "The Mother of All Lies" Nominated for 2024 Academy Awards
The critically-acclaimed Moroccan film "The Mother of All Lies," directed by Asmae El Moudir, has reached a historic milestone by being pre-selected for the "Best International Feature Film" category at the 96th Academy Awards ceremony. After winning the Golden Star at the Marrakech International Film Festival, "The Mother of All Lies" is now among the nominees poised for Oscar glory in 2024.
A total of 15 films from around the world have been shortlisted in the prestigious category so far. Just 10 films will make the final cut when the full list of nominees is revealed on January 13th. The pinnacle awards ceremony will then take place on March 10th, 2024 in Los Angeles.
"The Mother of All Lies" tells the intimate story of director Asmae as she returns to her family home in Casablanca to help her parents move. Sorting through old possessions in her childhood house, she discovers a photo from her early years that calls her origins into question. Using her camera to get answers from her parents, Asmae begins peeling back the layers of small untruths and distortions that have shaped her understanding of self and history.
Through this introspective journey, the film illuminates the fallibility of memory while exploring the themes of identity and family legacy. El Moudir's directorial debut has resonated strongly with critics and audiences for its poignant examination of how even the closest relationships are built upon narratives that evolve over time. With its nomination, "The Mother of All Lies" has the chance to garner global recognition for Moroccan cinema on the biggest stage of all. The eyes of the film world will be watching closely to see if this remarkable film can bring Oscar gold back to its North African roots.
