The Royal Moroccan Navy took decisive action this week, undertaking a dramatic rescue operation to save nearly 100 migrants in distress at sea. During a routine maritime patrol in the Atlantic waters off the coast of Moroccan Sahara on Thursday, a Moroccan Navy frigate intercepted a small boat situated 186 km southwest of the city of Dakhla, carrying 91 sub-Saharan migrants.

According to a statement from the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, the overcrowded vessel included 8 women and a baby. These individuals had embarked on a perilous journey from West Africa, with their destination set for the Canary Islands of Spain. Their risky expedition across the open waters was undertaken in a flimsy boat clearly ill-suited for the challenges of such a long ocean crossing.

Upon the navy frigate's discovery of the migrants in dire need of assistance, the crew promptly shifted into rescue mode. Immediate medical aid was administered to those showing signs of dehydration, malnutrition, or other ailments resulting from their harrowing ordeal at sea. Subsequently, all 91 individuals were safely transported to the port city of Dakhla, where they disembarked.

Upon arrival in Dakhla, the migrants were handed over to the Royal Gendarmerie for processing in adherence to standard legal procedures. This recent rescue operation underscores the pivotal role played by the Royal Moroccan Navy in patrolling the nation's waters and safeguarding vulnerable lives at risk on the high seas. Thanks to their rapid response, what could have been another tragic migrant crossing attempt concluded not in sorrow but in relief.
