The African Development Bank (AfDB) has allocated €246 million to fund the construction of the strategic Guercif-Nador highway in Morocco. This initiative is poised to revolutionize transportation infrastructure and catalyze economic growth.

The funding package comprises €200 million from the AfDB and an additional €46 million from the Africa Growing Together Fund. The primary objective of the highway is to enhance logistics in the Oriental region, facilitating seamless access to the Nador West Med port and business zone.

Going beyond mere connectivity, the project aims to reduce vehicle costs and enhance safety along the route. Notably, the transport sector contributes 15% to Morocco's revenue and employs 5% of the workforce, underscoring its pivotal role in the nation's economy.

In alignment with the broader strategy of upgrading transport infrastructure, the highway will establish a vital link between Nador West Med and the national network. This linkage is anticipated to attract investments and create new opportunities in the Oriental region, according to the AfDB.

The bank has diligently conducted assessments to evaluate the environmental and social impacts in the area. Morocco's commitment to modernizing its transportation infrastructure is geared towards fostering growth across various sectors and appealing to potential investors.

The significance of this project extends beyond the Guercif-Nador highway. The Tiznit-Dakhla highway, spanning over 1,000 kilometers, will facilitate faster shipping to the south and improve accessibility for tourism. With the addition of the Guercif-Nador section, Morocco continues its strategic efforts to build essential infrastructure, thereby fortifying trade and overall development.
