Uruguay Eyes Morocco Friendly to Gear Up for Copa América 2024
In anticipation of the forthcoming 2024 Copa América, the Uruguayan national football team, affectionately known as La Celeste, is strategically considering a friendly match against Morocco as part of its comprehensive preparation regimen, as disclosed by Uruguayan Football Federation President Ignacio Alonso earlier this week.
Bolstered by prominent figures such as Ronald Araújo, Federico Valverde, and Darwin Núñez, Uruguay is eager to challenge itself against formidable opponents in the lead-up to the Copa América, scheduled from June 20 to July 16, spanning across the United States.
Morocco emerges as an appealing contender for several reasons, not least due to the competitive history shared between the two teams. Their initial encounter dates back to 1964 in Casablanca, where Morocco clinched a 2-1 victory on their home turf. A subsequent clash occurred in 2015 in Agadir, resulting in Uruguay securing a narrow 1-0 triumph.
Securing a fresh friendly fixture with Morocco aligns with Uruguay's longstanding tradition of engaging in matches against high-caliber African teams, crucial for refining their form and team cohesion ahead of major tournaments. With the 2022 World Cup now behind them, all focus is shifted towards clinching South America's most prestigious continental title next summer.
