Tangier Med Port Sets New Container Volume Record, Solidifying Position as Mediterranean Leader
The Tangier Med port complex surged ahead in 2023, achieving a milestone by handling 8.6 million containers, equivalent to 95% of its designated capacity, as reported by Hassan Abkari, Managing Director of the Tangier Med Port Authority (TMPA), on Thursday.
Abkari highlighted the remarkable feat, stating, "In 2023, we reached a record-breaking figure of 8,617,410 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), marking a substantial 13.4% increase compared to 2022." He emphasized that Tangier Med outpaced the Port of Algeciras, which managed nearly 4.7 million containers, firmly establishing its dominance in the Mediterranean and African regions.
In addition to the record container volume, Abkari noted positive growth across various port activities. Vehicle exports surged to nearly 600,000 units in 2023, a notable 21% rise from the previous year, showcasing Morocco's robust industrial capability in exporting "Made in Morocco" vehicles.
Furthermore, roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) traffic experienced a 4.11% increase compared to 2022, with the handling of approximately 477,993 TIR trucks, illustrating the port's diverse operational growth.
Kamal Lakhmas, the port commander and director of the Tangier Med Harbor Master's Office, highlighted that Tangier Med hosted over 16,900 vessels in 2023, including 1,100 large ships, marking a significant 17% surge from the preceding year. He attributed this accomplishment to the efficient and secure berthing and unberthing operations, acknowledging the collaborative effort of all stakeholders involved in the port complex.
The TMPA underscored the strategic importance of Tangier Med, aligning with the vision of HM King Mohammed VI. It emphasized Tangier Med's forward-thinking approach, poised to tackle new challenges and fortify its status as a pivotal logistics hub in Morocco and the wider Euro-Mediterranean region.
