Morocco Denounces Human Rights Watch for Alleged Bias in Rights Violation Claims
Morocco has vehemently rejected recent allegations of human rights violations leveled against the North African nation by Human Rights Watch (HRW), asserting that the organization's report is biased and aims to tarnish the country's reputation.
In a robustly worded statement, Morocco's Ministerial Delegation for Human Rights criticized HRW's 2023 report, contending that it lacked neutrality, objectivity, and professionalism. The delegation accused HRW of relying solely on one-sided narratives from individuals with a vested interest in undermining Moroccan interests.
According to the delegation, HRW's report failed to accurately acknowledge the progress made by Morocco in the realm of human rights. Instead, it purportedly recycled unverified accusations from previous years, some of which pertained to issues that had been addressed and resolved in accordance with the rule of law.
"Most of the allegations presented by HRW against Morocco are outdated, dating back more than a decade or nearly so," the statement asserted.
The delegation further criticized HRW for its alleged failure to acknowledge Morocco's willingness to engage with international human rights monitors. It accused HRW of amplifying misleading charges from biased sources while overlooking Morocco's efforts to facilitate dialogue and cooperation in the field of human rights.
Regarding the Sahara issue, the delegation accused HRW of displaying anti-Moroccan bias by neglecting to recognize Rabat's internationally recognized initiatives aimed at achieving a sustainable resolution over the past two decades. Furthermore, the delegation argued that HRW turned a blind eye to terrorist attacks perpetrated by the Polisario Front in southern Morocco and to reported rights abuses within Algerian refugee camps under the control of the same group.
"This demonstrates that HRW has become a tool for those who seek to challenge Morocco's territorial integrity," the delegation concluded.
Overall, Morocco's Ministerial Delegation for Human Rights vehemently refutes HRW's allegations, portraying them as unfounded and biased, and asserts that HRW's report fails to accurately represent the complex realities of the situation in Morocco.
