Madrid - Contrary to recent reports in the Iberian media, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares announced this week that Morocco and Spain are currently in negotiations regarding the control of airspace over Moroccan Sahara.

In an interview with El Periodico de España, Albares emphasized that the ongoing discussions aim to enhance the management of the airspace, in line with a specific point outlined in the joint statement of April 7, 2022. He clarified, "There is a point in the joint statement which is public and relates to improving management, and that is what we are doing."

However, the foreign minister stopped short of confirming the outright transfer of control of Moroccan Sahara's airspace to Morocco, stating unequivocally, "We are talking about improving management. There is no ambiguity about that."

Point 7 of the Morocco-Spain joint declaration, issued on April 7, 2022, had initially indicated that "discussions regarding the management of airspaces will be initiated" between the two nations.

This development follows a previous acknowledgment by the Spanish government in March, responding to a written question from Coalition Canaria senator Fernando Clavijo, who has since been appointed president of the Canary Islands regional government. At that time, the Spanish government had confirmed that "discussions with Morocco on granting control of the airspace over Moroccan Sahara have begun."

Highlighting the nature of these negotiations, Albares stressed, "The negotiations with Morocco in this regard relate to the management of the airspace and coordination between the two parties, aiming to achieve greater security in connections and technical cooperation, as outlined in point 7 of the Morocco-Spain joint declaration of April 7, 2022."
