EU backs French battery plant with €48 million boost for electric Renault icons

The European Commission has approved a €48 million grant to support Envision AESC's construction of a battery manufacturing facility in Douai, northern France. The plant will produce batteries for the upcoming electric versions of Renault's iconic 5 and R4 models, marking a significant step toward European battery independence.

The €2 billion industrial venture will establish a strategic lithium-ion battery production site adjacent to Renault's Douai factory. Beyond the Commission's grant, Envision AESC has secured €450 million in funding from the European Investment Bank, highlighting the project's strategic importance for European industrial autonomy.

The facility's scope extends beyond Renault, as it will supply batteries to other European automakers. Starting in 2025, the plant will initially produce 9 GWh of batteries annually, with plans to expand to 24 GWh by 2030. This scaling will create 1,000 direct jobs in the Hauts-de-France region, providing significant economic benefits to an area designated as disadvantaged by the European Commission.

Environmental considerations are central to the project, with the facility designed to achieve carbon neutrality, aligning with European industry decarbonization goals. The proximity to Renault's factory will optimize logistics and reduce transportation-related carbon emissions.

The Commission acknowledges that public support was crucial for launching this €2 billion investment. The strategic location in Douai creates perfect synergy between battery manufacturing and automobile production, enhancing the site's competitive edge. This project represents a key milestone in establishing a robust European battery supply chain for the automotive industry's electric future.

The plant will not only serve Renault but will also supply other European automakers, strengthening the continent's battery production capabilities and reducing dependency on external suppliers. This diversification enhances the project's economic viability while contributing to European industrial autonomy in electric vehicle components.
