Spain Integrates Moroccan Culture and the Green March into Education
Spain has taken a significant step in reinforcing its support for Morocco's sovereignty over Moroccan Sahara by incorporating aspects of Moroccan culture and history, including the Green March, into its educational system. This initiative, first launched in the Murcia region, reflects a deepening of ties between Madrid and Rabat, signaling Spain's implicit endorsement of Morocco's autonomy proposal for its southern provinces.
Reports indicate that Murcia has been the pioneer in introducing a program focused on “Arabic language and culture,” with a special emphasis on Moroccan traditions. The curriculum now highlights key moments in Moroccan history, including the Green March of November 6, 1975, which is celebrated as a national event in Morocco.
The Green March was a landmark event where Morocco peacefully reclaimed its southern provinces, which had been under Spanish control, with around 350,000 unarmed volunteers marching into the region. By formally including this historic event in the curriculum, Spain appears to be further acknowledging the legitimacy of Morocco’s sovereignty over the disputed area.
This curriculum reform follows Spain’s pivotal 2022 decision to officially support Morocco’s autonomy plan for Moroccan Sahara. The changes aim to strengthen the cultural connection between the two countries, underscoring their shared historical ties. Recently, both nations have made strides in enhancing cooperation in areas such as education and diplomacy. This shift in Spanish education underscores Spain’s commitment to reinforcing bilateral relations and supporting a practical and lasting resolution to the Sahara conflict.
