A devastating explosion at a coal mine in Asturias, Spain, has resulted in the deaths of five individuals and left another four seriously injured. The incident occurred on Monday at the Cerredo mine in Degana, situated approximately 450 kilometers (280 miles) northwest of Madrid.

Initial reports indicated that two workers were unaccounted for, but local emergency services later confirmed that all personnel have now been located. The exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation; however, emergency responders reported an "incident" linked to a "problem with a machine." Local media have suggested that the machine itself may have exploded.

The injured workers were promptly transported to hospitals in nearby cities, with two of them requiring helicopter assistance due to the severity of their injuries, which included burns and a head trauma.

In a statement on social media platform X, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his "sincere condolences" to the families of the victims and extended wishes for a "speedy recovery" to those injured in the blast. Additionally, the president of the regional government of Asturias, Adrián Barbón, announced two days of mourning to honor the deceased.

Mining has historically been a cornerstone of Asturias' economy, a region characterized by its dense forests and mountainous terrain. This incident harkens back to a tragic event in 1995, when 14 miners lost their lives due to a similar explosion near the town of Mieres.
