Winter weather alerts in Spain amid snow and low temperatures
A strong winter storm has triggered weather alerts in several regions of Spain due to heavy snowfall and extremely low temperatures, particularly affecting the northern half of the country. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), six autonomous communities have been placed under alert. In Castilla y León, multiple roads have been impacted, while Madrid has activated the Winter Weather Plan at Level 0.
Specifically, yellow warnings have been issued for snowfall in the provinces of Teruel, Ávila, Burgos, Salamanca, Segovia, Soria, Madrid, La Rioja, Cuenca, and Guadalajara, with the latter seeing an orange-level alert. Additionally, the Catalan provinces of Barcelona, Girona, and Lleida, along with Huesca, are facing cold-related risks, including severe frosts, particularly in the Pyrenees region.
The overall forecast predicts unstable conditions across the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, with mostly cloudy skies and light precipitation. This will affect much of central and southern Spain before reaching the northeastern areas. Significant snowfall is expected in the northern regions, especially in the Central System, Iberian System, northern plateau, and later in the Pyrenees.
