Veteran filmmaker Alex Gibney’s latest documentary, The Bibi Files, exposes a deeply controversial chapter in Israeli politics, delving into the corruption allegations surrounding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The film draws from over 1,000 hours of leaked police interrogation footage involving Netanyahu, his family, and close associates. These interviews, part of an extensive corruption probe, reveal a complex narrative of power, privilege, and political intrigue.

A Bold Undertaking

The genesis of the film was unexpected. Gibney received a significant leak through the Signal messaging app, leading to an unprecedented trove of evidence. Lacking knowledge of Hebrew, he collaborated with Israeli investigative journalist Raviv Drucker, whose expertise uncovered the explosive nature of the material. Alexis Bloom, a seasoned filmmaker with ties to Israel, was brought on to direct the project.

Despite its compelling subject matter, the documentary faced significant hurdles. Fundraising was fraught with challenges due to the sensitive content and escalated tensions following the October 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel. Furthermore, Israeli privacy laws prohibit the film from being screened domestically, forcing many Israelis to resort to VPNs or pirated copies to view it.

The Corruption Case

The film coincides with Netanyahu’s historic court appearances, where he faces charges of fraud, breach of trust, and bribery. Accusations include accepting lavish gifts, such as cigars and champagne, in exchange for favors, and manipulating media regulations to secure positive coverage. The leaked footage captures Netanyahu’s dismissive and defiant attitude during questioning, frequently claiming memory lapses. His son Yair and wife Sara also feature prominently, with Sara reprimanding investigators and Yair accusing the police of ulterior motives.

A Divisive Impact

The documentary has polarized viewers, reflecting Israel’s deep divisions over Netanyahu’s leadership. Supporters dismiss it as a politically motivated attack, while critics see it as a damning indictment of corruption. Analysts interviewed in the film argue that Netanyahu’s legal troubles influenced significant policy decisions, from judicial reforms to national security.

Adding to its significance, The Bibi Files contextualizes the events leading to the 2023 Gaza conflict, suggesting that political instability and judicial undermining created vulnerabilities that adversaries exploited. This connection, though contentious, underscores the broader implications of leadership compromised by self-preservation.

A Call for Reflection

While Gibney and Bloom assert that the film is not anti-Israel, they emphasize its role in fostering accountability. By showcasing the consequences of unchecked political power, The Bibi Files invites viewers to reconsider governance structures, such as the potential benefits of term limits. Ultimately, the documentary advocates for critical discourse, challenging the notion that criticism of a leader equates to disloyalty.

In shining a light on one of Israel’s most polarizing figures, The Bibi Files transcends national boundaries, offering a universal cautionary tale about the intersection of power, corruption, and democracy.
