Moroccan Tourism Surges to Nearly 1 Million Visitors in January Ahead of Major Sporting Events
The resurgence of Morocco's tourism industry from the impacts of the pandemic is evident as it welcomed nearly 1 million visitors last month, as revealed by figures released by the Ministry of Tourism.
In January 2022, the country saw 992,000 tourists arriving, marking a notable 10% increase compared to the same period last year. This rise was propelled by significant increases in both the number of Moroccans residing abroad returning home and foreign tourists, with respective increments of 9.5% and 11%.
These surging arrival numbers underscore the indispensable role tourism plays in Morocco's economy, particularly as the sector rebounds from two years of extensive travel restrictions and border closures during the global health crisis.
Adding to the optimism, Morocco has set an ambitious target of attracting 17.5 million international visitors annually by 2026. Notably, considerable progress has already been achieved, with a record-breaking 14.5 million tourists welcomed in 2021, representing a remarkable 34% surge from 2020.
Concurrently, tourism revenues have experienced significant growth, reaching $10.5 billion according to government figures. The Ministry attributes the sector's swift recovery to the Kingdom's strategic approach to safely reopen borders and welcome travelers back.
Forecasts by experts suggest that visitor numbers will continue to climb in the coming years as Morocco gears up to host two massive global sporting events: the 2025 African Cup of Nations and the co-hosting of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal. These tournaments are anticipated to attract massive crowds and international attention to Morocco's rich cultural and natural attractions.
As Africa's tourism continues to ascend, all indications point to Morocco solidifying its position as a premier destination for both international and domestic travelers alike. The country's captivating mountainous landscapes, vibrant medinas, and renowned hospitality make it well-positioned to capitalize on the resurgence of travel in the post-pandemic era.
