Strengthening Parliamentary Relations: Morocco and Jordan Pave the Way Forward
In a concerted effort to reinforce the enduring ties between their nations, leaders from Morocco and Jordan convened in Rabat this week to explore avenues for deepening cooperation between their respective parliamentary bodies. This meeting marked a renewed commitment to enhancing collaboration not only in legislative affairs but also across broader economic and political domains.
Rachid Talbi Alami, the esteemed President of the Moroccan Chamber of Representatives, warmly welcomed a delegation from the Jordanian parliament's legal committee, headed by the distinguished Haitham Ziadin. Discussions focused on the crucial exchange of experiences and expertise, with both sides expressing confidence that this collaborative approach would significantly enhance parliamentary action and promote greater coordination between their legislative bodies.
The encounter served as a poignant reminder of the long-standing and amicable relationship shared by Morocco and Jordan throughout history. The Jordanian delegation commended Morocco's steadfast support for the Palestinian cause, led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, and its invaluable contributions to international peace and security initiatives. Furthermore, Ziadin reiterated Jordan's unwavering support for Morocco's territorial integrity, highlighting the enduring bond between the two nations.
This visit follows the recent appointment of Fouad Akhrif as Morocco's new ambassador to Jordan, a strategic move aimed at further solidifying bilateral ties. While diplomatic relations between the two countries are robust, there is a pressing need to enhance economic cooperation, given that trade exchanges currently remain relatively modest, with a volume barely exceeding 41 million dinars ($57.8 million) in 2021.
This statistic underscores the untapped potential for economic collaboration, despite existing agreements such as the Free Trade Agreement signed in 1998 and the Agadir Agreement implemented in 2016. Therefore, this meeting represents a pivotal moment in the pursuit of stronger economic synergies, emphasizing the shared commitment to leveraging historical ties and advancing mutual growth and prosperity.
