Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley delivered a stunning upset just two days before Super Tuesday, defeating Donald Trump in the Republican primary in Washington DC. Despite the district's strong Democratic leanings, Haley managed to secure a victory by capturing the support of a minority of GOP voters, outpacing the former president by a significant margin of 63% to 37%.

Despite the relatively small number of approximately 22,000 registered Republicans in Washington, the primary held symbolic weight. Haley's camp interpreted her win as a signal that certain segments of the party are willing to move beyond Trump's polarizing leadership. A spokesperson for Haley remarked, "It's no surprise that Republicans intimately familiar with the dysfunction of Washington reject Donald Trump and his tumultuous administration."

Unsurprisingly, Trump's team downplayed the loss, labeling Haley as the "Queen of the Swamp" in a nod to Trump's 2016 campaign promise to "drain the swamp" in Washington. His campaign manager suggested that the primary results would serve as motivation for Trump supporters leading up to more significant nominating contests.

While Trump has emerged victorious in early voting states like Missouri, Michigan, and Idaho in the days preceding the Washington primary, Haley's unexpected win introduces an element of unpredictability into the race. With 14 additional states set to hold primaries on Tuesday, the outcome of these contests could prove pivotal for Haley's burgeoning campaign. All eyes are on whether Haley can extend her appeal beyond the deeply Democratic capital and mount a challenge to Trump's bid for renomination.

On the Democratic side, the primary contest has yet to gain significant traction, with President Biden facing minimal opposition. However, tensions are escalating among Republican ranks as Trump and Haley vie for control over the party's future.
