In a well-coordinated effort, Moroccan authorities have successfully dismantled an extensive network responsible for trafficking over 150,000 canisters of nitrous oxide throughout the country.

This week, simultaneous raids in Casablanca, Marrakech, and surrounding areas resulted in the arrest of five suspects and the confiscation of a significant quantity of the psychoactive gas, commonly referred to as "laughing gas."

The operation was initiated when officers in Casablanca intercepted a cargo van transporting 18 boxes filled with numerous gas canisters. Subsequent investigations led to the discovery of an additional 333 canisters concealed by two accomplices.

Further scrutiny uncovered a substantial stockpile in a warehouse located outside Berrechid, consisting of over 50,000 canisters of various sizes containing the regulated substance. Meanwhile, in Marrakech, the remaining two suspects were found in possession of more than 100,000 small canisters and 22 large ones.

Additionally, authorities seized a significant amount of cash believed to be proceeds from the illicit sale of the gas, which is legally used as an anesthetic in medical settings. Presently, all five individuals are undergoing interrogation by prosecutors as part of the ongoing judicial inquiry.

The General Directorate of National Surveillance has revealed that the nitrous oxide was intended for non-anesthetic purposes, likely for inhalation due to its psychoactive properties. Authorities are actively pursuing other members of the network and endeavoring to uncover the origins of this extensive trafficking scheme.

This well-coordinated enforcement action underscores law enforcement's dedication to combatting the distribution of regulated chemicals for unlawful purposes. With ongoing investigations, additional arrests may be imminent for those profiting from the underground market for laughing gas.
