His Majesty King Mohammed VI welcomed Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to Rabat yesterday in a highly anticipated meeting, signaling warmer ties between the two neighbors. The leaders took stock of the progress made since adopting a landmark joint declaration last year and pledged to further strengthen bilateral links.

Almost a year to the day from their previous summit, where a new era of partnership was launched, Sánchez and the King reaffirmed their commitment to building on the strong foundations of trust and mutual respect that have long characterized Morocco-Spain relations. Both emphasized the unique opportunities for cooperation across diverse fields, from trade and investment to security cooperation and cultural exchange.

Specifically, the pair discussed preparations for a potential joint bid with Portugal to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup. They also touched on Spain's firm backing for Morocco's autonomy initiative as the only viable solution to end the long-running Western Sahara dispute. The Prime Minister reiterated his country's support for Rabat's serious and credible proposals, a move gratefully received by King Mohammed VI.

Morocco's strategic initiatives in areas like promoting regional development and energy cooperation through projects like the Atlantic Gas Pipeline also earned praise from Sánchez. Such proactive leadership has won international recognition and support, including from key partners like Spain.

In wrapping up a productive meeting, the leaders committed to deepening bilateral cooperation within the framework of their friendship treaty. With transparency, dialogue, and commitment to agreements guiding the relationship, Morocco and Spain are well-positioned to take their partnership to new heights across political and economic spheres.
