UK Figures Rally for Moroccan Autonomy Plan Endorsement

Over 30 British parliamentarians and members of the House of Lords have petitioned the UK government to formally recognize Morocco's Autonomy Plan as the most viable solution to the protracted Sahara dispute. In a letter addressed to Lord Alister Jack, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs, the signatories underscored the urgency of swiftly resolving the conflict to bolster regional stability and international security.

The letter, shared by Lord Hugo Swire on social media, emphasized the pivotal role of strengthening partnerships with nations like Morocco, a strategic ally in North Africa with shared values and perspectives. As conflicts escalate in the Middle East and instability spreads across the Sahel region, the MPs and Peers warned against further separatism or division, advocating for reinforcing Morocco's proactive engagement in fostering regional security.

"The dangerous escalations and catastrophic effects of conflict in the Middle East have intensified the spread of terrorism and extremism, providing an opportunity for hostile militias to broaden their ideological reach and influence beyond their own borders," the letter stated.

The signatories highlighted the economic and geopolitical potential of the Sahara region, citing developments such as the port in Dakhla as evidence of sustainable progress and international cooperation. Describing the region as a "hub for innovation and international cooperation in Africa," the letter suggested that it could significantly enhance energy opportunities, secure supply chains, and enable access to new markets, provided it receives backing from UK financial institutions like UKEF and BII, similar to the support offered by other countries, including the US and France.

The MPs and Peers argued that endorsing Morocco's Autonomy Plan aligns with UK principles and international commitments while contributing to peace in the region. "The Autonomy Initiative proposed by Morocco for Sahara, balanced with respect for local traditions and democratic aspirations, offers a viable path toward lasting peace and stability," the letter asserted, citing support from Western allies and over 80 countries worldwide.

As the upcoming UK-Morocco strategic dialogue approaches, the signatories urged the British government to seize the opportunity to redefine its role and influence in the region by extending unequivocal support to Morocco's initiative. "Morocco deserves our unequivocal and complete support; it is our responsibility, and the security of the region urgently demands it," the letter concluded.

The appeal from UK figures comes amidst mounting pressure on the government to endorse Morocco's proposed solution to the longstanding Sahara dispute, reflecting the growing recognition of the Autonomy Plan's potential to foster stability and security in the region.
