Tanger's High-Tech Surveillance Sweep: A 56 Million Dirham Investment in Public Safety
In a bid to enhance urban security measures, the city of Tanger is embarking on an ambitious project to strengthen its video surveillance network. With an impressive investment of 56 million dirhams, the city, located at the Strait of Gibraltar, will see the installation of 533 state-of-the-art surveillance cameras across its public spaces.
This significant project marks the culmination of a multi-party partnership agreement involving institutional partners and elected councils. The provisions of this agreement were recently approved during the ordinary session of the Tanger municipal council held in May 2024.
According to municipal authorities, "This project aims to equip public spaces with video surveillance systems, enabling the services of the General Directorate of National Security to monitor and manage road traffic, issue citations to offenders, combat crime, and protect public property."
The implementation of this project will unfold in phases over a three-year period, as stipulated by the partnership agreement. As one of the principal local partners, the Tanger municipal council is contributing 14 million dirhams towards the installation of these surveillance cameras and the necessary infrastructure for their operation.
Furthermore, the General Directorate of Territorial Communities is providing a substantial 28 million dirhams to finance this endeavor, while the Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima Regional Council (CR-TTA) is contributing an additional 14 million dirhams.
Upon completion, the beneficiary urban axes will be linked to a control room where images captured by these cameras will be centralized. These cutting-edge, high-tech devices will offer optimal 24/7 surveillance services to the designated zones, ensuring round-the-clock monitoring.
It is worth noting that, like other major cities in the Kingdom, Tanger initiated its first large-scale installation of high-performance surveillance cameras nearly a decade ago. Implemented in phases, this project was part of the city's efforts to combat insecurity and crime in its priority and most sensitive neighborhoods, including the old medina, Boukhalef, and Beni Makada—the latter being the most densely populated area of Tanger.
This initial surveillance initiative aimed at ensuring the security and smooth operation of the ambitious Tanger-Metropole program, which encompassed numerous large-scale development projects within the city.
As Tanger continues to evolve and grow, this latest 56 million dirham investment in state-of-the-art surveillance technology underscores the city's unwavering commitment to safeguarding its public spaces and fostering a secure environment for its residents and visitors alike.
