In a revealing interview on CBS's '60 Minutes', Vice President Kamala Harris tackled pressing questions regarding her economic plans and the complexities of U.S. foreign relations, particularly concerning Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The interview, which aired on Monday, comes at a pivotal moment in the presidential race as Harris and her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, remain in a tight contest.

Harris faced scrutiny from CBS correspondent Bill Whitaker about how she intends to fund her ambitious economic proposals, which include constructing millions of new housing units, offering tax breaks for new parents, and providing $25,000 in down payment assistance for first-time homebuyers. In response to concerns about the financial implications of her plans, which a recent report estimates could increase federal debt by up to $8.1 trillion by 2035, Harris asserted her commitment to raising taxes on billionaires and large corporations. Whitaker challenged her on this approach, questioning how she could persuade Congress to adopt such measures. Harris maintained that there are lawmakers willing to support her initiatives if she were president.

The vice president's economic vision aims to support working-class Americans and contrasts sharply with Trump's proposals, which are projected to add up to $15.15 trillion to the national debt over the same period. "I cannot afford to be shortsighted in how I envision fortifying America's economy," Harris stated emphatically during the interview.

When probed about whether Netanyahu is a close ally of the United States, Harris skillfully navigated the question by reframing it. "The better question is: Do we have an important alliance between the American people and the Israeli people? And the answer is yes," she replied. This response comes amid heightened tensions in U.S.-Israel relations following a year marked by violence and loss of life in Gaza, where nearly 42,000 Palestinians have died since Hamas's attack on Israel last October.

On the subject of Ukraine, Harris firmly rejected the idea of engaging in peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin without Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy present. She expressed concern over Trump's approach to foreign policy, suggesting that if he were still in office, Putin would have already taken Kyiv. "He claims he could resolve it on Day 1. You know what that means. It's about capitulation," she asserted.

Throughout the interview, Harris defended her ideological shift toward the political center, reiterating that her core values remain unchanged. She emphasized her belief in building consensus and finding common ground as essential components of effective governance.

In addition to discussing policy issues, Harris addressed personal topics during the interview, including her ownership of a Glock pistol—a detail that drew attention after a previous event with Oprah Winfrey where she made light-hearted comments about home defense. When asked if she had ever fired it, she confirmed she had done so at a shooting range.

The '60 Minutes' segment is part of an extensive media campaign for Harris as Election Day approaches. With appearances lined up across various platforms, including podcasts and television shows, Harris aims to engage with voters more directly than in previous months.

As she continues her campaign trail alongside running mate Governor Tim Walz, who also participated in the interview, Harris is poised to address critical issues facing voters while navigating a complex political landscape marked by economic challenges and international conflicts.
