A recent visit by the Casablanca Real Madrid fan club to the Santiago Bernabéu stadium has ignited a heated debate over territorial sovereignty and international relations. The Moroccan supporters, officially recognized by both Real Madrid and Moroccan authorities, proudly displayed a map of Morocco that included the disputed Sahara region during their weekend excursion to the Spanish capital.

The fan club, established a decade ago with 175 members, aims to promote Real Madrid's image and values through community engagement. Their presence at the Bernabéu coincided with Real Madrid's victory over Villarreal in a La Liga match. Social media images captured the group inside the stadium, showcasing the Moroccan flag while wearing vests featuring the comprehensive national map.

This display has drawn criticism from some Spanish media outlets, particularly El Independiente, which described the map as "illegal" and in violation of international law. The publication cited concerns from social media users who viewed the incident as provocative, especially regarding the status of Ceuta and Melilla, Spanish enclaves in North Africa.

However, the controversy comes against the backdrop of Spain's evolving stance on the Sahara issue. Since April 2022, Spain has recognized Morocco's sovereignty over the region under the proposed 2007 Autonomy Plan. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares recently reaffirmed this position, describing the Spanish-Moroccan relationship as "strategic and essential."

The incident highlights the complex interplay between sports, politics, and territorial disputes. Morocco's Autonomy Plan for Sahara has gained support from an increasing number of nations, including the United States, France, and 18 European countries, with Denmark being the latest to endorse it.

As the debate unfolds, it underscores the ongoing sensitivity surrounding territorial issues in the region and the potential for sporting events to become platforms for political expression. The incident at the Bernabéu serves as a reminder of the intricate relationship between national identity, international diplomacy, and the global stage of football.
