Tragedy struck a peaceful retirement community in Florida as tornadoes generated by Hurricane Milton tore through the area, killing four residents and leaving behind a trail of destruction not witnessed in decades, officials confirmed on Thursday.

The violent twisters hit St. Lucie County around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, hours before Hurricane Milton was expected to make landfall. Among the hardest-hit areas was the Spanish Lakes Country Club Village, a retirement neighborhood for residents aged 55 and older. County spokesperson Erick Gill reported that more than one of the fatalities occurred in Spanish Lakes, though it remains unclear if all four victims lived in the community.

“I can't confirm that all of them were from the Spanish Lakes neighborhood that was hardest hit,” Gill told reporters. “But I know there was more than one.”

The deadly tornadoes struck suddenly, catching many off guard. No evacuation orders had been issued for the area prior to the storm, as officials had not anticipated such intense weather conditions so far ahead of the hurricane's expected impact.

“One of the challenges with tornadoes is you don’t really get much warning,” said Gill. “I’ve been here for 21 years, and I’ve not seen destruction like this since Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne hit 20 years ago.”

As emergency crews continue their search and rescue efforts, authorities remain on high alert, combing through the devastation to locate any survivors who may still be trapped in the wreckage.

"We're not going to stop until we double-check, triple-check to make sure that anyone who needs to be rescued is rescued," St. Lucie County Sheriff Keith Pearson said in a video message addressing the community.

The tornadoes have not only claimed lives but left a deep scar on this quiet retirement community, shattering homes and displacing numerous residents. Recovery efforts are underway, but the road ahead for survivors is expected to be long and difficult.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant as Hurricane Milton continues to pose a threat to the region. Further updates will be provided as search and recovery efforts progress.
