In the wake of Hurricane Helene, North Carolina is intensifying its search and rescue operations to assist hundreds of individuals isolated by washed-out roads and disrupted communication systems. Hurricane Helene made landfall on the Florida Gulf Coast last Thursday, unleashing widespread destruction across southeastern states over several days. As of Monday evening, nearly 1.8 million homes and businesses from Florida to Ohio were still without power. This includes significant outages in South Carolina and Georgia, where at least 25 deaths have been reported.
In Buncombe County, which includes Asheville, a popular tourist destination, 40 fatalities have been confirmed. Local residents describe the scene as apocalyptic, with extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. One evacuee remarked on the overwhelming nature of the disaster compared to previous experiences with hurricanes.
As recovery efforts continue, President Joe Biden plans to visit North Carolina on Wednesday to assess the situation and may call for Congress to reconvene for a special session aimed at securing additional aid funding.
