Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently convened with leading US technology executives in New York, urging them to consider India as a prime destination for manufacturing and innovation. This meeting took place shortly after Modi attended the annual Quad summit alongside leaders from the US, Australia, and Japan.

India is actively positioning itself as an alternative to China, attracting global firms looking to diversify their supply chains. In recent years, the country has particularly focused on semiconductor manufacturing, an area where it currently trails behind major players such as China and Taiwan.

At the meeting, attended by 15 prominent CEOs including Sundar Pichai of Google, Shantanu Narayen of Adobe, Arvind Krishna of IBM, and Jensen Huang of NVIDIA Modi emphasized the potential for collaboration in co-developing, co-designing, and co-producing technology in India for a global audience.

The Indian foreign ministry highlighted that discussions during the roundtable revolved around technology's potential to spur innovation that could transform the global economy and improve human development.

In addition, Modi addressed a rally of Indian-Americans in New York, referring to them as "brand ambassadors" for India. He articulated the nation's crucial role in various global arenas, including development, peace, climate action, and supply chains.

Earlier, Modi met with US President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the Quad summit, resulting in several signed agreements, including a significant semiconductor pact. This deal, described as a "watershed arrangement," aims to establish a fabrication plant to produce chips for national security, next-generation telecommunications, and green energy applications. Notably, this initiative represents India’s first project to supply chips to the US armed forces and allied military forces.

Despite previous setbacks in developing a homegrown semiconductor industry, the renewed focus from the US on building resilience against China’s semiconductor sector provides a fresh impetus for India’s ambitions in this field. Reports indicate that the planned plant will concentrate on three essential aspects: advanced sensing, communications, and high-voltage power electronics.

While Modi's visit garnered attention, it notably did not include a meeting with former President Donald Trump, who recently praised Modi but had no arrangements made for a discussion. This visit marks Modi's first trip to the US since winning his third term and coincides with the approaching US presidential elections.

During the Quad summit, leaders issued a joint statement emphasizing maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region, strongly opposing destabilizing actions aimed at altering the status quo by force. Analysts noted that while China was not explicitly named, the language used in the statement was notably stronger, reflecting growing concerns among Quad nations regarding Chinese activities in the South China Sea.

In addition to maritime security, the Quad partners announced plans for expanding maritime surveillance, developing a pilot logistics network for disaster response, and launching a project to combat cervical cancer.

This series of high-profile meetings underscores India's strategic push in technology and manufacturing, reinforcing its position as a significant player on the global stage.
