Guatemala Reaffirms Strong Stance on Morocco's Sahara Autonomy Plan
In a significant diplomatic development, Guatemala has reiterated its unwavering support for Morocco's sovereignty over the disputed Sahara region. This reaffirmation came during a recent session of the United Nations General Assembly's Fourth Committee, where Guatemala's Deputy Permanent Representative, Maria Jose Castillo, delivered a compelling address.
Castillo emphasized Guatemala's endorsement of Morocco's 2007 autonomy proposal, describing it as a "credible, realistic, and serious" foundation for resolving the long-standing territorial conflict. The Guatemalan diplomat praised the initiative as a viable path towards a peaceful, negotiated solution that respects Morocco's national sovereignty.
"Guatemala considers the autonomy initiative as the most credible and pragmatic foundation for achieving a compromise that ensures Morocco's territorial integrity," Castillo stated, underscoring her country's position on the matter.
The support extends beyond mere rhetoric, as Guatemala has taken concrete steps to demonstrate its commitment. In December 2022, the Central American nation opened a Consulate General in Dakhla, becoming the first Latin American country to establish a consular presence in Morocco's southern provinces. This move was hailed as a symbol of friendship between the two nations and an acknowledgment of the growing economic opportunities in the region.
Castillo also expressed Guatemala's backing for UN-led efforts to mediate a resolution, highlighting the crucial roles of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in fostering a balanced approach to the conflict. She stressed the importance of resuming UN-led round table talks involving Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the Polisario Front, viewing this dialogue as essential for regional stability and security in the broader Maghreb.
The Guatemalan representative's address at the Fourth Committee, a specialized body of the UN General Assembly dealing with various global issues including decolonization efforts, carries significant weight in international diplomatic circles. It signals a growing trend of support for Morocco's position on the Sahara issue, potentially influencing other nations' stances.
