Estonia Endorses Morocco's Autonomy Plan as Credible Solution for Sahara Region

In a significant diplomatic development, Estonia has officially endorsed Morocco's autonomy initiative as a "serious and credible basis" for resolving the longstanding Sahara regional dispute. This announcement comes as part of Morocco's ongoing international diplomatic efforts, spearheaded by King Mohammed VI.

The joint declaration, issued following Monday's high-level meeting in Rabat between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Estonian counterpart Margus Tsahkna, specifically references Morocco's 2007 autonomy plan. Estonia's endorsement validates the proposal submitted to the UN Secretary-General as a constructive framework for achieving a definitive resolution to the Sahara question.

Estonia's Foreign Minister reaffirmed his country's support for the United Nations-led process, emphasizing the need for a "just, pragmatic, sustainable, and mutually acceptable political solution." Both nations underscored the UN's exclusive role in the political process and expressed their commitment to UN Security Council Resolution 2703, which highlights the parties' responsibilities in pursuing a realistic, compromise-based solution.

The joint statement emphasized fundamental principles of the UN Charter, particularly regarding respect for state sovereignty and territorial integrity. This diplomatic stance aligns Estonia with numerous European nations that have already expressed support for Morocco's territorial sovereignty and autonomy initiative.

Estonia's position represents a strategic alignment with the growing international consensus supporting Morocco's approach to the Sahara region, marking another diplomatic achievement in Morocco's efforts to gather international backing for its territorial integrity and proposed autonomy framework.

This diplomatic development carries particular significance for international observers, policy makers, and stakeholders interested in North African geopolitics and regional stability initiatives. The endorsement adds another European voice to the diplomatic discourse surrounding the Sahara region's future governance structure.
