Catholic Clergyman Faces Mounting Legal Troubles Amid Sexual Assault Allegations

In a case that continues to send shockwaves through religious communities across the southern United States, a Roman Catholic priest with connections to Louisiana and Texas finds himself at the center of an expanding investigation into alleged sexual misconduct and possession of illicit images.

Anthony Odiong, 55, who was recently incarcerated in Florida on charges related to possessing child abuse imagery, now faces additional accusations of sexual assault. Authorities in Waco, Texas, announced late Thursday that Odiong has been charged with two counts of sexual assault, marking a significant escalation in the case against the clergyman.

The Waco Police Department revealed that a total of eight individuals have come forward with allegations against Odiong. These accusers claim that the priest attempted to leverage his position of spiritual authority to pursue sexual contact that was either unwanted or to which the victims could not legally consent.

Texas law is particularly stringent in cases involving clergy members and their congregants. The state criminalizes sexual activity between religious leaders and adults who are emotionally dependent on their spiritual guidance. Moreover, Texas law allows for the prosecution of such cases regardless of when the alleged offenses occurred if a pattern of behavior involving five or more victims can be established.

The investigation that led to Odiong's arrest was sparked by a Guardian report published in February. Following the publication of this report, an individual approached the Waco Police Department with an accusation of sexual assault dating back to 2012.

Subsequent legal actions allowed investigators to access Odiong's email and cloud storage accounts. These searches reportedly uncovered messages detailing explicit sexual encounters with another woman who had not previously come forward. Additionally, authorities claim to have discovered images depicting minors in various states of undress, some of which appeared to involve adult interaction.

Odiong's journey through the Catholic Church began with his ordination in the diocese of Uyo, Nigeria, in 1993. He later received invitations to work within the diocese of Austin, Texas, in 2006 and in Luling, Louisiana, in 2015. His assignments included positions at the St. Peter Catholic student center near Baylor University in Waco and St. Anthony of Padua in Luling.

The priest gained popularity among parishioners by claiming a special connection to the Virgin Mary through prayer. He became known for conducting "healing masses," after which some attendees reported recoveries from significant medical conditions. This reputation boosted both church attendance and Odiong's standing with congregants and diocesan officials.

However, Odiong's career began to unravel as accusations mounted against him. The Austin diocese prohibited him from ministering in its region in 2019, with the New Orleans archdiocese following suit in December 2022.

The arrest in Ave Maria, Florida, on Tuesday led to Odiong being held without bail. As of late Thursday, he remained in custody in Florida, with plans for his transfer to Waco yet to be determined.

Prior to his arrest, Odiong had publicly dismissed the allegations against him as "a false, salacious, one-sided smear campaign" in an open letter posted on social media. Attempts to reach Odiong's legal representation have been unsuccessful since his arrest.

The case has potential implications beyond Texas and Louisiana. It remains to be seen whether Odiong's arrest will attract the attention of Louisiana State Police, who recently served a search warrant on the New Orleans archdiocese.
