In a significant diplomatic gesture, Moroccan Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch arrived today in Nouakchott to represent King Mohammed VI at the inauguration of Mauritania’s re-elected President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani. El Ghazouani begins his second term after securing a decisive victory in the recent presidential election.

Upon his arrival at Nouakchott's airport, Akhannouch was warmly received by Mauritania's Prime Minister Mohamed Ould Bilal Messaoud and Morocco’s Ambassador to Mauritania, Hamid Chabar. This visit underscores the strong ties between Morocco and Mauritania, reflecting mutual respect and cooperation.

El Ghazouani's re-election was marked by a first-round win, where he garnered 56.12% of the vote. His closest competitor, anti-slavery activist Biram Dah Abeid, trailed with 22.10%, while Hamadi Ould Sid’El Moctar of the Tewassoul party secured 12.78%. This clear mandate reaffirms El Ghazouani's leadership and his vision for the nation's future.

The president’s second term promises a continuation of stability and development in Mauritania, a country that has managed to remain relatively peaceful despite the turmoil in the Sahel region. El Ghazouani has pledged to accelerate investments in energy and mining, sectors crucial for the economic boost Mauritania needs.

Since taking office in 2019, El Ghazouani has navigated the country through significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and global economic disruptions. His administration's efforts have not gone unnoticed, particularly in maintaining security and fostering peace. As chair of the African Union, Mauritania has been commended for its effective management of security threats.

In a move to strengthen Morocco-Mauritania relations, earlier this year, Rachid Talbi El Alami, Speaker of the Moroccan House of Representatives, announced the Morocco-Mauritania Parliamentary Forum. This annual event, alternating between Rabat and Nouakchott, aims to enhance bilateral cooperation. It will serve as a crucial platform for addressing shared concerns and promoting partnerships across various sectors, including politics and business.

Akhannouch's presence at the inauguration symbolizes Morocco's commitment to supporting Mauritania's journey towards prosperity and stability. The continuation of El Ghazouani's leadership is viewed as a positive development for the region, promising further collaboration and mutual growth for both nations.
